Light to read
Light to Read is a women’s literacy program that teaches illiterate women reading, writing, and basic numeracy. In many underprivileged communities, women have not had opportunities for education due to cultural barriers. By teaching these women to read and write, the program enables them to read with their children, fostering a culture of literacy within families.
Additionally, as part of the class, women are given funds to invest in income-generating activities of their choosing. This aspect of the program helps women enhance their business skills, providing them with opportunities to generate income and improve their economic standing.
Women in the “Light to Read” program recently received funding to invest in ventures aimed at empowering them economically. The class in Kitiyolo, Kenya, made a strategic decision to invest their funds in purchasing mango and avocado trees. They planted these trees, nurturing them to grow and eventually bear fruit. Once the trees mature and produce fruit, the women sell the produce to generate income, creating a sustainable source of revenue. Simultaneously, planting the trees helps protect the environment by combating deforestation. This initiative not only fosters economic independence but also contributes to environmental conservation. Through literacy and thoughtful investment, the women of Kitiyolo are building a brighter, greener future for themselves and their community.
